July 2014 – East Ayrshire Council – A719 Waterside

East Ayrshire Council is the first in the country to install new dual LED Active Road Studs on a major rural, 60mph road, which was encountering a number of accidents.
East Ayrshire Council has a statutory obligation to introduce initiatives designed to promote road safety and reduce road deaths and casualties. Whilst welcoming a continuing reduction in deaths and injuries on regional roads, further reductions remain a high priority and this project sought to make a difference using the most up to date technology.

180 solar recharged, battery powered SR-15 Active Road Studs were installed over a period of 4 hours helping address a number of incidents happening on the A719.

The SR-15, with 4 LEDs (2 in each direction), highlighted the horizontal and vertical geometry of the road effectively. The studs also helped improve visibility of the centre and carriageway edges and the rumble effect warns drivers if they start to encroach onto the opposite carriageway.

Drivers on this key route near to Waterside village can now see the difference innovative road studs make. Bright delineation and advance warning of bends, making a safer more enjoyable driver experience.
The technical challenges of co-ordinating all the various elements of this project was an example of collaborative working at its best and since completion in March 2013, there has been a 100% reduction in incidents on the stretch of road.

Alan Vass, Road Safety Engineer of the Ayrshire Roads Alliance said:

Rennicks SR-15 Active Road Studs have contributed towards a significant reduction in reported injury accidents at Waterside. The site continues to perform well in all types of weather conditions. Ayrshire Roads Alliance has received very positive feedback from local residents and commuters and the technology will without doubt be considered for future road safety schemes.
